Never write anything digitally ever
I was talking with my friend, Rebecca, the visual artist, the other day. I now forget who it was she was ragging on — some group of geeky or artsy people. She said they had… I think the description she used was, “horribly, ugly home pages.”
I thought that anyone who would offer a critique like that must be pretty proud of how her own home page looked, so I googled her. I didn’t find her home page, but I didn’t really expect to because I mentioned my intent to search her in a subsequent conversation. She said her home page was an “in progress” placeholder at the moment, but that it would be live this weekend! Using my impressive (ha!) deductive reasoning skills, I found said “in progress” page, and to encourage its completion, I’m going to pre-emptively link to it. Click here for Rebecca Strzelec’s home page.
All of this is a long-winded way of introducing the fact that I googled myself shortly thereafter. This was fortunate. Not only did I realize I had santaal.com mis-configured (If you went to WWW.santaal.com, you got his home page, but if you went to plain old santaal.com, you got mine!) But I also found, on the very first search results page:
* A dangling pointer from when I was “the nerd”, writing an “ask the nerd” column in the web’s first weekly features magazine, back in 1994!
* A test message sent to a mailing list I was adminstering 11 years ago.
Bored of standard “test” messages, I made this one a little more creative, but I was a MUCH younger person 11 years ago. I wonder how much this very blog entry will embarrass me when I come across it in 2017?
